Despite a steady drumbeat of scientific studies showing nicotine vapes help people switch off smoking, including those with no intention to quit. Many within tobacco control continue to devote resources and press policies to restrict or ban e-cigarettes and other safer nicotine products.
Even good news about the dramatic drop in teen vaping and a massive decline in youth smoking rates seems to have had little impact.
Joining us today to talk through the science and debate over nicotine vaping in the U.S. is Dr. Raymond Niaura, Interim Chair of the Department of Epidemiology and Professor of Social and Behavioral Sciences at NYU School of Global Public Health where he’s also the Co-Director of the Tobacco Research Lab.
Is it possible tobacco control could one day validate vaping? Find out!

A U.S. federal appeals court issues a scathing rebuke of FDA’s authorization process for flavored nicotine vaping products, reversing marketing denial orders for two mid-sized vape manufacturers and ordering the regulator to take a fresh look at their PMTA applications. Could this ruling upend the FDA’s de facto ban on nicotine vaping products? Find out in this live edition of RegWatch by RegulatorWatch.com.

CONTROL & CRISIS | Relentless Pursuit of New Forms of Harm | RegWatch
Tuesday Dec 19, 2023
Tuesday Dec 19, 2023
For many years, the primary goal of tobacco control policy was to achieve what public health called the "tobacco endgame," a goal that tobacco control pursued relentlessly. That is until nicotine vapes upended the "quit or die" narrative and swiftly became the number one tool for smoking cessation, an outcome derided by many within public health, leading to a new endgame: the end of nicotine.
Joining us today to talk about public health's pursuit of a nicotine endgame is Clive Bates, tobacco control policy expert and former Director of Action on Smoking and Health (UK). Bates says the purpose behind the moral panic over vaping is to sustain tobacco control's business model, necessitating a pursuit of "new forms of harm."
Is there a future for nicotine? Find out!

BAD COP | Global Tobacco Control Conference in Disarray | RegWatch (Live)
Thursday Nov 30, 2023
Thursday Nov 30, 2023
Many critics often accuse the World Health Organization of maintaining an 'obsessive and paranoid secrecy' regarding COP, its Conference of the Parties to the WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control. However, with the recent postponement of COP10, perhaps it's time to consider adding incompetence to the list of criticisms.
Joining us today for a special live edition of RegWatch to discuss the confusion surrounding the postponement and what we can expect when COP10 convenes in February 2024 are Lindsey Stroud and Martin Cullip from the Taxpayers Protection Alliance in Washington, D.C.

BREAKING POINT | Industry Reaction to Flavour Bans & Tax Threat | RegWatch
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Tuesday Nov 21, 2023
Not long ago, many Canadians felt they could trust their governments to protect and promote their physical and mental well-being. It's a promise enshrined in Canada's Health Act and echoed by provincial governments across the land.
But this high-minded ideal is proving a farce with the growing number of provincial bans on flavoured nicotine vaping products and crippling sales taxes and excise duty.
Darryl Tempest, executive director of the Canadian Vaping Association, is joining us today to discuss the impact of Quebec's new flavour ban and the worrying news that Ontario plans to join the federal vaping excise tax program.
Is the Canadian vaping industry at its breaking point?

PUSHING LIMIT | Canadian Economist Troubled by Vape Taxes & Flavour Bans | RegWatch
Thursday Nov 16, 2023
Thursday Nov 16, 2023
Never before has the future of nicotine vaping in Canada looked so perilous. With the province of Quebec now wholly joined with New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and the Northwest Territories in banning or restricting flavours in nicotine vaping products, hundreds of thousands of Canadians now have little or no access to a vital tool for tobacco harm reduction.
Taxes are also compounding the difficulties for Canadian vapers, first with the federal government and its recently levied excise tax. Now, with the news that Ontario intends to join the federal tax program, thus doubling the excise duty on nicotine vaping products sold in Canada's largest market.
Joining us today to discuss these troubling developments is Ian Irvine, professor of economics at the Department of Economics at Concordia University in Montreal.
Is Canada now hostile territory for nicotine vapers? Find Out!

REVERSE COURSE | Youth Vaping Rates Hit Historic Low | RegWatch
Tuesday Nov 14, 2023
Tuesday Nov 14, 2023
What will the U.S. FDA do now? With the release of the 2023 National Youth Tobacco Survey, it’s now not only certain the so-called “epidemic” of teen vaping is over, but it looks like it was mostly hype in the first place. In the last four years, the teen vaping rate crashed to a historic low, dropping over 60% since its 2019 high.
Joining us today is Tony Abboud, executive director of the Vapor Technology Association. He says the 2023 NYTS data fundamentally undercuts the FDA’s teen vaping narrative, which it has gripped onto for years while pushing the myth that flavors drive youth vaping.
Will the FDA reverse course? Find out!

FLAVOUR BAN FEVER | Canadian Provinces Threaten Health Gains | RegWatch
Wednesday Nov 01, 2023
Wednesday Nov 01, 2023
With Quebec’s flavour ban on nicotine vaping products now in effect, the clock is ticking on what may become a public health disaster for the province. According to a growing body of research on the impact of flavour bans, sales of combustible cigarettes are likely to grow while safer nicotine vaping products crater. Most alarmingly, where sales of flavoured nicotine products are restricted, teens tend to turn to smoking—destroying the very reason for implementing flavour bans in the first place.
Joining today to discuss Canada’s flavour ban fever is Dr. Michael Pesko, the J. Rhoads Foster Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Missouri. He’s a co-author of new research examining the effects of flavor restrictions on tobacco product sales. The results are troubling, indicating a rise in combustible cigarette sales where flavor bans are implemented.

Friday Oct 27, 2023
Friday Oct 27, 2023
When using a nicotine vape to quit smoking or to stay quit, flavors are essential. They provide endless opportunities to tailor the vaping experience to personal taste. Without flavors, vaping becomes less viable as a tool to quit smoking. Yet public health and anti-vaping groups push flavor bans and flavor restrictions in jurisdictions across North America. But at what cost?
Joining us in this episode of RegWatch is Dr. Michael Pesko, the J. Rhoads Foster Professor of Economics in the Department of Economics at the University of Missouri. He’s a co-author of new research examining the effects of flavor restrictions on tobacco product sales. Friday Oct 20, 2023
Ontario’s no-fault auto insurance system should provide auto accident victims with injuries deemed to be minor direct access to essential healthcare services such as physio, chiropractic, and massage therapy. But the system comes with a catch that caps available treatment, leaving many without the care they need to heal fully.
Joining us today to help unpack Ontario’s auto insurance system is Peter Lawriw-Bahan, the director of medical-legal services at Pace Law, an Ontario law firm with over with over 40 years of experience representing auto accident victims in the province.
