E345 - PRIDE & PREJUDICE | U.S. VAPE INDUSTRY IN 2021 | REGWATCH
Friday Jan 15, 2021
Friday Jan 15, 2021
With the door now finally shut on the disastrous year of 2020, it’s time to reflect on how vaping and tobacco harm reduction in general, faired during a year that brought massive upheaval to the lives of so many. At the epicentre of the turmoil is the public health movement and as so often is the case, its intersection with politics.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Greg Conley the president of the American Vaping Association. Hear Conley’s take on which disaster caused more damage to the U.S. vaping industry: the scare over the so-called teen vaping epidemic, EVALI, or the response to the pandemic. And hear his detailed warning about the recently passed vape mail law that bans U.S. Mail shipments of vaping products and forces online vape sellers to comply with an unwieldy tax mandate.

The Canadian federal government announced late last year that it’s moving to restrict nicotine levels in vaping products that are manufactured, imported, or packaged for sale in Canada. The new restrictions that are now up for public consultation are based on the European Union’s Tobacco Products Directive, which sets the maximum concentration of nicotine in vaping products at 20-milligrams per millilitre.
Joining us today to talk about the impact and efficacy of nicotine caps is Lynne Dawkins, Professor of Nicotine and Tobacco Studies at London South Bank University. Professor Dawkins is one of the UK’s leading authorities on e-cigarettes, having published numerous papers on the use, acute effects and delivery of nicotine through vaping products.

Another hammer has dropped on the Canadian vaping industry. The Federal government announced it is moving to restrict nicotine levels to a maximum concentration of 20mg/mL for vaping products manufactured, imported, or packaged for sale in Canada.
For many Canadian vapers, the proposed new limit would slash (by half for some) the amount of nicotine consumed when vaping and (by Health Canada’s own projections) cause some vapers to return to smoking.
In this episode of RegWatch Darryl Tempest, executive director and lead advocate from the Canadian Vaping Association discusses the impact of the proposed nicotine cap and provides a roundup of the fight against flavour bans and vape taxes sprouting up in provinces across the country.

Submit and give up. This is the demand made by tobacco control officials in their effort to destroy vaping as a viable alternative to smoking. While vapers have been the target of this type of harassment for many years, tobacco harm reduction researchers are increasingly coming under fire.
In this episode of RegWatch meet Dr. Marewa Glover, Director at the Centre of Research Excellence: Indigenous Sovereignty & Smoking, New Zealand. Learn why Dr. Glover believes a tightly networked cabal of tobacco control officials are blacklisting and bullying THR researchers; deploying propaganda and other tactics of coercion, in order to frustrate smokers switching to less harmful sources of nicotine.

Big tobacco is evil. This “truth” serves as the foundation for tobacco control policymaking across most of the world. Public health bureaucrats, politicians and non-profit health advocacy groups believe so strongly in the evil of big tobacco that they ostracize any person or group they deem to be advancing the interests of the tobacco industry.
Perhaps big tobacco is evil. Combustible tobacco products are deadly and for decades the industry lied to the public, marketed to children and spent untold millions influencing public policy. Yet, by branding big tobacco as evil, public health organizations like the WHO have egregiously marked vastly less harmful alternatives to smoking, such as vaping and snus as complicit.
Joining us today on RegWatch is Clive Bates, tobacco control policy expert and former Director of Action on Smoking and Health (UK). Bates believes tobacco control crusaders have baked into policy a principle of “irreconcilable conflict” between the interests of the tobacco industry and public health. Bates says the principle is both permanent and inescapable.
What does this mean for vaping?
